East Ruston Old Vicarage
The West Field & Woodland Garden
Woodland gardening is comparatively new to
us. Now that our tree planting has grown
sufficiently tall we are enjoying the fun and
the challenges, not to say the variety of ‘shade’
gardening.
The West Field and Woodland Garden is
criss-crossed with gently meandering paths to
give a naturalistic feel. We have endeavoured
again to give this area an extremely long season
of interest. This starts as early as February with
the first snowdrops and aconites to which we
add several thousand each year. As well as other
spring flowering bulbs, plants and shrubs this
area contains part of an extensive
collection of hydrangeas. These give colour,
texture and interest from June to October
when they are joined with a fanfare of autumn
leaf colour from shrubs such as acers and
viburnums together with trees such as
liquidambars and Nyssa sylvatica.
On the eastern side of the West Field are
two further areas of interest. The Holly Field
contains part of our growing collection of
hollies together with other interesting trees and
shrubs. To the north of this is the New Zealand
Garden planted with many rare and unusual
New Zealand natives growing between groves
of cordylines and phormiums.
