East Ruston Old Vicarage
Vegetable & Cutting Garden
Leaving the Wildlife Pond via the serpentine
birch walk (Betula utilis var. jacquemontii
‘Silver Shadow’) we proceed northwards to
the Vegetable and Cutting Garden. Here we
grow our vegetables for the house in a
no-nonsense manner, each row or block
planted to compliment its neighbour.
Growing the plants in rows enables us to hoe
them regularly, keeping down the weeds and
aerating the soil at the same time. The same
rule applies in the Cutting Garden. Dahlias,
chrysanthemums, sweet peas, gladioli, Dutch
iris are all here together with many others.
At its centre we have a large terracotta pot on
an ornamental plinth containing a productive
fig tree. This in turn has four smaller pots
containing various saladings. Also within this
garden is a large pot of variegated horseradish
and pots of apple mint which is far too
aggressive to be allowed free reign in the
garden proper.
