East Ruston Old Vicarage
The Sunk Garden
This garden was constructed by digging into a
slope, the idea being to get some shelter from
the almost ever-present wind in this part of
the world, and it works. At the heart of this
garden is a filled basin in the centre of which
is a stainless steel and glass sculpture by
Bill Cordaroy. On each corner of the basin is a
block of yew. This is a deliberate design feature
as it does not allow you to see everything at
once, but encourages exploration. As you
proceed around the basin the central sculpture
changes shape when viewed from each
direction. This area also contains some raised
beds where we grow some of the more
precious plants that otherwise might become
lost in larger garden areas. There are plants to
interest us here at every month of the year.
Having explored this area on both its levels
exit under the small pergola at its western side.
