East Ruston Old Vicarage
The Red & Purple Border/Green Court
We say ‘for now’ because we are known for
our penchant for change. This border has
seen many changes from a dog’s breakfast to
tropical border, a cottage garden, to the present
planting. Here we endeavour, as we do
elsewhere throughout the garden, to have
colour and interest for as long a period as
possible. At its centre this border has a wooden
summer house with a shingle tiled roof where
you may sit, tarry a while and take in the view
across the main lawn to the Dutch Garden.
The planting here is a mix of perennial and
exotic planting, in fact anything that will give
us the desired effect.
At the end of the Red and Purple
Border is an archway in the beech hedge
through which is seen a covered urn on
a plinth. We enter this cool green area with
its two clipped holm oak arches on stilts
designed to give a calming and cooling space
to the heart and mind; this acts as a repose as
we go from one flower packed area to another.
Proceed across this garden through the holm
oak arches and towards the other end you will
find on the right another archway cut through
the beech hedge where yet another surprise
awaits you.
