Nursery Garden, Plant sales and Entrance Court

The gardens are approached via the nursery, plant sales and service area to the house. On the plant stand you will find many varieties not easily available elsewhere, most of which we propogate from plants growing in the garden, so that you have a chance of buying something unusual and, sometimes, exceedingly rare.

Passing the small Clock Tower, you will arrive at the private entrance to The Old Vicarage comprising a Yew circle and driveway. In the centre is a round bed of variegated box containing clipped golden variegated hollies and a mop-headed acacia Robinia pseudoacacia "Umbraculifera" at its centre. In high summer, a feature is Kniphofia uvaria "Nobilis" together with large exotic bedding plants.

Entrance Court... The entrance to the main garden is through a set of blue wrought iron gates ornamented with gilded spheres. The gates are there to prevent errant delivery drivers taking their vans up to the front door of the house, causing considerable damage to plants.

The walls, built in 1987, replaced a hedge of Eleagnus ebbingii. The principal planting comprises many varieties of Viticella clematis, honeysuckle, Brown Turkey Figs and Rosa banksia "Lutea" together with fennel, cistus, yuccas, palms, agapanthus, Phormium "Yellow Wave" and "Jester", and is enhanced with exotic bedding. This area was the original front entrance and driveway to the house before it was moved to the present access way. The surface under the gravel comprises crushed brick and rubble, and, at first, the planting was confined to small borders adjacent to the walls, but it has subsequently been allowed to creep forward and is now planted directly in the gravel and brick rubble.

An oak gate in the wall adjoining the house leads into...
