... The Dutch Garden. The eastern section of this garden dates back to the 1970s, and formed part of one of the earlier layouts of the garden. When we were able to live here permanently and extended the house, the western enclosing hedge was removed and a replica of what was then the box garden was created to form a mirror image, with a central access way designed to line up with, and make a formal setting for, the extension. The parterres are bedded out each summer with different schemes and we pride ourselves on the originality of these plantings which are sometimes outlandish and always very different.

The bed adjoining the retaining wall of the lawn contains, for early interest, Fritilaria imperialis "Rubra" and, for later, Hosta sieboldiana. The two small beds flanking the steps were once filled with Yucca gloriosa, but they became far too large and tree-like and cast shadows onto the terrace of the house.
