The Californian
Border and
Desert Wash

... The Californian Border features a large variety of different species from California and arid regions.

The newly created Desert Wash is an imitation of part of a desert such as Arizona where heavy thunderstorms occur twice a year, the flood water ripping through the surface creating rough and rugged channels. This is totally different from a dried up river bed where the stones are rounded and smooth. The planting will continue over the next few years.

Heading towards East Ruston church, past the spectacular Cornfield on the left make a right turn to the Red and New Zealand Borders. The Red Border is quite startling being backed by the wonderful green of the Monterey Pine with Rosa rugosa 'Red Max Graf' climbing up into it. This border is filled with red flowering plants, but, unlike most red borders, there is little bronze foliage being principally red and green, which are complimentary colours, presenting greater and the more startling contrasts.

Adjoining the Red Border is the New Zealand Garden which is characterised by massed stands of Cordyline australis and the New Zealand 'Toe Toe', many different pittosporum, hebes, oleorias and phormiums.


Proceed back towards the Pavilion at the top of the hill then in an easterly direction leading to the three vistas to be enjoyed from the circular seat which is their focal point. The centre view looks towards Happisburgh Church which is standing on the cliffs 1 1/2 miles away. The left hand vista is through the Hornbeam Hut down the Long Borders to the cupola covered in climbing roses, clematis and other plants. The third view through the other Hornbeam Hut leads to the Winter Garden which is being established. Turning to the right is a triangle of Pyrus 'Chanticleer' beyond which are the Vegetable and Cutting Gardens, the produce of which are grown for the house.
